Bioscreens

General
Contaminations involving volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VOCl) are often extensive and in many cases the source is not accurately known or cannot be reached because of the presence of buildings or infrastructure. In such cases the obvious solution is to stop the spread of the contamination by isolating it from its surroundings. One of the methods for achieving such isolation is a bioscreen. In a bioscreen a strip of soil perpendicular to the groundwater flow is biologically activated, so that the contaminants in the groundwater flowing through this strip are degraded. In fact, a bioscreen is not much more than a special type of in situ remediation with which a lot of experience has been amassed.
