Tilburg: No cure, no pay
22-10-2006. The municipality of Tilburg has concluded its first contract for a soil remediation operation with an obligation to achieve specific results, which amounts to a no cure, no pay contract. Alderman for environmental affairs Marieke Noorman signed this contract with BioSoil earlier this month. It involves the approach to a historical contamination with mineral oil and petrol products at a site on the Dijksterhuisstraat. This site along the Wilhelmina canal, housed an oil trade company from 1925 until 1965. Because of, among other things, unnoticed leakage from the underground storage tanks of the company, the soil has been seriously contaminated with mineral oil and petrol products. In the meantime, the groundwater flow in the direction of the canal also caused a contamination plume. This plume has almost reached the canal bank and threatens to contaminate the surface water. BioSoil has committed to reduce the mineral oil contamination to the levels stipulated in the contract within a period of 5 years at most. A combination of conventional and in situ techniques will be used to accomplish this. BioSoil will start the remediation operation at this site in the beginning of 2007.
